Sister Mary Frances Judge
"The Color of Devotion"

An Artist-Nun’s Search for the Divine through Pigment, Prayer, and Cosmic Light

The Museum of Biblical Art, in cooperation with Dallas’s Jesuit Academy and Ursuline Academy, opens a penetrating new exhibition of paintings featuring Sister Mary Frances Judge. She was Artist in Residence at Dallas Ursuline Academy in the 1970s and has exhibited in galleries throughout the world for over 50 years. The display captures her lifelong exploration of spiritual evolution and the cosmic journey.

Art Historian, Author, and Curator Dr. Scott Peck: “The paintings reflect the artist’s statement that faith allows her to venture into the unknown, to believe in the unseen, emphasizing the contemplative tension between visibility and mystery.” “Each painting functions as a visual prayer — an invocation of the infinite through canvas and color.” The New York Times, in the article “New Gallery Opens with Nun’s Work”, described her work as "a collection of mystical paintings in lyrical bursts of color showing the emergence of the soul of women from the unconscious realm of the collective human psyche”.

"The Color of Devotion" reveals Sister Mary Frances Judge’s lifelong pursuit to translate faith into form. From her quiet studio to international installations, the exhibition traces her journey of luminous abstraction. Each brushstroke is a meditation and each canvas a universe of belief and wonder. The artist balances the material - paint, texture, physicality, with the metaphysical - mystery, divinity, unseen forces.
